Northwestern University in Qatar students juggle roles as students and filmmakers, as they prepare to screen their first ever documentary: Broken Records. It will be shown at the new Student Center, Qatar Foundation on Tuesday, Feb. 8, 2011 at 6:30 pm.

 

Broken Records is a documentary on the rise of Arab Hip-Hop, directed and produced by NU-Q juniors - Rana Khaled, Shannon Farhoud and Ashlene Ramadan. The documentary is about Arab Artists and their cultivation of western art into modern Arab culture. It's about hip-hop and western culture influencing and creating a new Arab culture. This screening premiere on Tuesday will follow performances by local beat-boxers and break-dancers and a special performance by Omar Offendum, a Syrian American artist, who is globally recognized.

 

The Society of Professional Journalists and 51 East has teamed up to bring Omar Offendum to perform at this event.

“This documentary shows that rapping and beat-boxing are not just pleasure activities, but is a medium that the younger generation has opted to get their voices heard,” said the directors.

 

This screening event held by Society of Professional Journalists in Qatar, is open to all community members and residents in Qatar to watch the documentary and indulge them-selves in the new generation music of Arab hip-hop.
